One of the twin babies, born in the open outside New Civil Hospital in Surat two days ago, died during the treatment, hospital authorities said today.

The baby girl of Ramdulari Parmar died in the paediatric ward of the Civil Hospital yesterday evening.

According to the hospital officials, the baby was underweight at birth, and was on life support system.

Ramdulari, 38,, a resident of Icchapore area of the city, was brought to New Civil Hospital on the morning of March 8 -the International Women's Day - by her husband Pehlusinh.

She delivered twins (a boy and a girl) in the open space outside the hospital building. Her husband had alleged that she was not admitted to the maternity ward immediately upon arrival though she was in labour, because they did not have case papers.

The hospital authorities claimed that it was a case of misunderstanding. Superintendent Dr MK Wadhel had said that Ramdulari had been asked to wait outside, but not to leave the ward.

"Staff nurse asked her to wait for sometime as an operation was underway in the ward. She misunderstood and left the ward immediately, which is unfortunate," Wadhel had said.

Hospital has initiated an inquiry into the incident.
