Attack on northeast people should be probed by CBI: Asian rights body

The Asian Centre for Human Rights (ACHR) has expressed concern over people hailing from India's North Eastern states fleeing from various parts of the country out of fear of being attacked in the wake of the recent Bodo-Muslim conflict.

According to Suhas Chakma, Director, ACHR, at least 5,000 people have left from Bangalore alone.

Chakma said the central and state governments have failed to take appropriate action against those spreading doctored MMS to provoke attacks on people from the north east and those involved in attacks on north eastern people following the Bodo-Muslim conflict in Assam.

Insisting that the matter needed to be probed by the Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI), Chakma said: "The state governments have failed to take action against those who have been spreading doctored MMS of the riots in Assam to provoke attacks on the North Eastern people. With respect to those who have been arrested in Pune, the Maharashtra Police had failed to invoke the Scheduled Castes and Scheduled Tribes (Prevention of Atrocities Act), despite many of the victims belonging to Scheduled Tribes community and being attacked based on their for their physical features."

He added: "Those who have stabbed Tenzin Dhargiyial (22), a Tibetan presuming to be a Bodo are still roaming around freely and the State has failed to assuage the fears of the people from the North Eastern region."
