After LG and VS Hospital, it's the turn of Civil Hospital to show grave medical negligence. On Saturday morning, a woman patient of the hospital in Asarwa died after being operated three months back. Her family members alleged that she suffered for three months and eventually died because of negligence by doctors.

According to them, the doctors cut the large intestine by mistake, instead of making a cut on her uterus or womb, after she was admitted for removal of a tumour in her uterus.

On August 24, Jashodaben Parmar, 42, a resident of Amraiwadi, was admitted to Civil Hospital by her family members, because of some gynaec problems. Earlier, she was admitted to a private hospital where she was diagnosed with tumor in her uterus. Since her family didn't have the money, they admitted her to Civil Hospital three months back.

"We were told that she will be discharged within a week. But the gynaecs made a cut on her large intestine instead of her uterus, which resulted in her suffering for three months before she died on Saturday morning," alleged Hasmukh Parmar, one of the deceased's relatives.

However, the hospital authorities have rejected the allegations of negligence. According to M M Prabhakaran, Jashodaben's intestine was cut as part of the operation. "The intestine was glued together with her womb, that's why a cut was done on it too. It is not negligence at all, because it was necessary to take out waste from her intestine through that cut," claimed Dr Prabhakaran.

Jashodaben used to work as sweeper in a private hospital, while her mother works as a servant at Civil Hospital. According to Hasmukh, Jashodaben was advised by her mother to do a check up at Civil Hospital, as the private hospital would charge Rs 7000 for the operation. "Her husband Natwarbhai is a security guard, so they didn't have the money and they admitted her to Civil where she was operated on August 25. After the operation by the gynaecs, she was referred to surgical doctors, who also conducted 2 operations to fix the mistake, but it was too late," said Hasmukh. He also claimed that due to the cut in the intestine, body waste spread in her body, which eventually killed her.

Arjun Kasundra, another relative of the Parmar family, claimed that no senior gynaec doctor was present during the operation. "When she was referred to the surgical ward after the operation, the doctors there lambasted the gynaec doctors for their mistake. I am a student of veterinary science, so I understood the terms and English conversations they were having," claimed Kasundra, who also claimed that gynaec doctors admitted their mistake in front of other doctors.

After Jashodaben's death, her family members approached the Shahibaug police to lodge their compliant. " They have taken our application and asked us to come again after the post mortem report arrives, only then will they take up the matter," said Hasmukh.
