The Tamil Nadu government today suspended Anna University (Coimbatore) vice chancellor Dr R Radhakrishnan, following allegations of corruption against him.

The state advocate general PS Raman informed the Madras high court of the suspension. The court had sought the views of the government on the matter and whether a FIR had been filed.

Recording the submission made by Raman, a division bench, comprising chief justice HL Gokhale and justice D Murugesan disposed of a petition filed by an advocate S Sivapandi, charging the vice chancellor with allegedly violating provisions of the University Act and accumulating wealth disproportionate to his known sources of income, among other things.

Raman said the government, after careful consideration, permitted the Directorate of Vigilance and Anti-Corruption (DVAC) to register a case agianst Radhakrishnan.

The DVAC had registered a case under Sec 7 and 13(2), read with Sec 13(1)(a), 13(1)(d) and 13(1)(e) of the Prevention of Corruption Act.

The advocate general said Radhakrishnan would remain suspended till completion of of the investigation.

Stating that in their view, there was nothing further to be done on the matter, the bench observed that the government was looking into the allegation and disposed of the petition.

The bench rejected the petitioner's request to keep the matter pending in court till the DVAC files the final report, holding that it would amount to monitoring the investigation.

The judges said they had no reason to presume that the investigations would not be carried out in accordance with the law.
