Even after one-and-half-year of its announcement, Ahmedabad Municipal Corporation's water meter project is still in pipeline.

On the other hand, 50 residential societies in the city have come up with an initiative to save water by installation of water meter.

"One out of six people in the world doesn't have access to safe drinking water," says World Water Council report.

People complain about not getting enough water supply, while AMC claims to provide 160 litre per capita per day water to Amdavadis. On the contrary, the average per capita water supply in the residential societies with water meter stands at 120 to 140 litres per capita per day.

According to residents, installation of water meter and charging for water on basis of consumption reduces wastage of water. "Before we installed water meters and started charging Rs10 per 1,000 litre, we had to use groundwater in addition to water supplied by AMC. Now, the Narmada remains our only source of water," said Chadrakant Patel, chairman of Ashirvad Tower in Ghatlodia ward.

When made to pay for water, people become extra cautious. "Now, people use waste water from RO plants for mopping and cleaning, while waste water from washing machine is used for flushing toilets," he said.

"As we have started charging for water, people have now become extra careful about leaking taps and overflowing water tanks, which was not the case earlier," said Dasrath Patel, secretary of Mandakini Society in Ghatlodia. The society installed water meters a year back.

By saving water, the residents are also able to save another natural resource -energy. This way, a lot of money is saved. Many residential societies have succeeded in cutting down their electricity bill by 50% to 70%. "Our electricity bill used to be nearly Rs46,000 per month, which has now reduced to just Rs16,000 per month. This has happened after installation of water meter," said Chandrakant Patel. Residents of Ashirvad Tower have now started getting 24x7 water supply, instead of just eight hours a day, said Patel.
