Some 10 lakh residents living in the central zone of Ahmedabad Municipal Corporation heaved a sigh of relief on Thursday after they learnt that water supply at their houses would be restored by Thursday evening. However, the joy was short-lived for a few who didn't receive water as assured. Residents of many areas remained without water.

AMC had given an assurance that the residents would get water for an hour in the evening. However, only a few households received water.

The low lying areas of central zone got water, while the people in the high rise areas didn't get water at all. Residents complained that they had not got water for two consecutive days and even the service of water tankers was highly irregular. All this has caused a lot of trouble to the dwellers.

Sources in AMC said there are high chances the central zone will get contaminated water on Friday. The civic body had cut down the supply so as to increase the carrying capacity of the pipelines.

The residents of nine wards-Kalupur, Dariapur, Shahpur, Dhudheshwar, Khadia, Jamalpur, Raikhad, Girdharnagar and Madhupura - had to face water problem for two days. In some areas, residents did get water on Wednesday morning but the pressure was extremely low. AMC supplied water through tankers at some places and people were seen in long queues near these tankers on Thursday morning.

The residents were in dismay and did not know what to do when they didn't receive water on Wednesday morning at 6am. "It disturbed our schedule and all we could do was to inquire about the situation in neighbouring areas," said Daksha Bhavsar, a resident of Kalupur.

According to residents, had AMC informed them earlier about the water cut, they could have stored water.

Bhavna Nayak, corporator from Kalupur ward, said, "Some residents were already aware of the water cut situation and were calling us since 4am demanding water through tankers." The civic body had discontinued the water supply in these areas to carry out the maintenance work.

Jatin Patel, chairman of AMC's water supply and sewerage committee said, "We have augmented the capacity of water pipelines. These pipelines are connected to the newly-built water pumping station at Madhupura so that people get water with adequate pressure." He added that people will suffer from this, but eventually will get better water supply.

The Congress alleged that AMC had provided only three tankers to supply water in the central zone. However, Patel discarded the allegations and said 20 water tankers were deployed in the area.
