A team of six officers of the health department of Ahmedabad Municipal Corporation (AMC) on Monday evening conducted a surprise raid on the eating joints at Chandkheda area of the city. When the health officials revealed to customers the poor standard of the food there, the citizens were shocked to find out that they were gorging on sub-standard stuff.

The officials checked the quality of food at various food outlets, paani puri vendors and snack/fast food joints. Several unhygienic eatables were found by the officials from the kitchens of popular food joints. Speaking to DNA, sanitary inspector of west zone, Sanjay Dave said, "Several eating joints had unhygienic surroundings, which is not preferable for health reasons. Also, many shops used leftovers of the previous night without realizing that it was spoilt."

Around 20 kgs of boiled potatoes were seized from paani puri vendors which were spoilt and thus destroyed. The officials also destroyed 10 litres of paani puri water. "The vendors do not understand that ice slabs should not be put in water. These slabs can be used for cooling but not for consumption as they are made in unclean conditions,” added Dave.
