AMC draws up plans to combat rise of jaundice, malaria in city

With the onset of summer, the Ahmedabad Municipal Corporation (AMC) is all set to combat viral diseases that plague denizens every summer - be they water-borne or vector-borne diseases. The civic body has therefore, prepared a rigorous action plan for reducing diseases in the city during this summer.

Addressing the media on Monday, municipal commissioner Guruprasad Mohapatra stated how the action plan has been designed and how it will help the citizens.

"Summer is the time when majority of the people suffer from water borne diseases. To reduce the chance of diseases, water samples will be taken from city's private, government buildings, banks, schools and colleges, offices, religious institutions, malls, theatres etc and will be regularly checked every 15 days," said Mohapatra.

The civic body chief further stated that from all the wards of the city, the supervisory staff, in the last two months, has collected a total of 2,410 samples for inspection. After sending it for testing at the municipal central laboratory, it was found that 2,251 samples are fit for drinking, while 56 samples were unfit for human consumption, he added.

The civic body is also preparing for reducing mosquito breeding spots in the city. Various spots like under construction areas were identified, where stagnant water is found the most. In the last few months, 308 notices, Rs1.12 lakh fine have been collected and 2.9 lakh pamphlets on health awareness were distributed by the AMC officials.
