A woman was reportedly caught by the Gujarat University police on Sunday, on charges of stealing a student's laptop. She allegedly confessed that she stole the laptop to buy a mangalsutra!
The woman works as a tiffin service provider, and her husband is said to be working with Physical Research Laboratory (PRL).
According to the police, Samskruta Prasad, a student of Ahmedabad Education Society's management institute, lives in the campus hostel opposite the Indian Institute of Management (IIMA).
She had registered a complaint on Friday, stating that her laptop was stolen from her hostel room a couple of days back.
"When we started investigations, we found out that it was the handiwork of an outsider. Soon, we discovered that the only outsider who goes frequently to the hostel was a tiffin service provider," said a source.
Sources said that the woman, named Urvashi Patel (name changed), was the only one who was allowed direct entry to the girls' hostel. When the police grilled her, she reportedly confessed to her crime.
According to the police, Patel said that she stole the laptop to sell it and purchase a mangalsutra for herself. She reportedly told the police that she had asked her husband to buy her a mangalsutra but he had refused, saying that gold prices were too high.
Unable to fulfill her desire, Patel stole the laptop when she found Samskruta's room open. The police have recovered the laptop and taken the woman on remand.
