Ahmedabad schoolchildren who wish to train in rock climbing may have reason to rejoice soon.  Ahmedabad police, who have started using a rock wall to train new recruits in rock climbing at the police headquarters in Shahibaug, also plan to provide the facility for schoolchildren.

"We are mulling the proposal. Schoolchildren can perhaps use it on Saturdays and Sundays. But as of now nothing has been finalised," said JCP, headquarters, Shamsher Singh. The facility will also be available to children of all police officials. The training will be provided by Mitesh Patel, who offers his service at the mountaineering institute in Mt Abu and Junagadh.

Earlier, new recruits had to first clear nine months training before being trained in rock climbing which happened at Mt Abu. But now, with the rock wall, rock climbing has been made part of the training curriculum. "At present 300 recruits are being trained here," said FM Qureshi, training PI at the police headquarters.

Apart from this, gymnastics and badminton training will also be provided to the children of police officials. The training will be given by Priyanka Parmar, a former national level player and a lady constable. Gymnastics training will be provided to children of police officials in the age group of six to 12.

Talking about the various initiatives, Singh said it was an effort to ensure that the children of policemen are engaged in meaningful activities. "Such activities help build flexibility, strength and stamina in children," he said.
