Dehgam assembly seat by-poll may prove to the last chance for corporators of both parties — the BJP and Congress — to flex muscles on neutral grounds. Both parties have vested the responsibilities of wooing the voters in Dehgam on the corporators from Ahmedabad, while also keeping in mind the caste equations that play an important part in the assembly area.

The corporators, from both the rival parties, who have been entrusted with major responsibilities include mayor Kanaji Thakor, former mayor Amit Shah, leader of opposition in AMC, Surendra Baxi, and former mayor Himmatsinh Patel.

Mayor Kanaji Thakor, who was also in the race for the Dehgam seat, is the BJP’s face to win over the OBC voters. “Thakor’s responsibility is not restricted only to Dehgam town. He is visiting the OBC pockets and particularly the areas with larger concentration of Thakor community in the entire assembly area,” said Jagdish Patel, president of Ahmedabad city wing of the BJP.

Moreover, each BJP MLA from Ahmedabad has been entrusted with the responsibility of one taluka. These MLAs will be supported with by the corporators and party workers of the wards that come under that particular assembly seat.

As the MLA from Ellisbridge assembly seat and corporator from Vasna ward of the AMC, Rakesh Shah, is busy with party (sangathan) activities, former mayor Amit Shah, who is also a corporator from Vasna, has been given the responsibility. The corporators from wards like Rakhial, Maninagar, Isanpur, Baug-E-Firdosh and other have been posted in Dehgam.

On the other hand, ex-mayor Himmatsinh Patel is a member of the Congress’ core team for Dehgam assembly seat along with veteran politician Narahari Amin. Surendra Baxi has been entrusted the responsibility of Dehgam along with Pankaj Shah, leader of city Congress. The other corporators have been asked to take care of nine wards with 27 booths of Dehgam.

“The corporators will coordinate with the local workers and take care of election management,” said Baxi, adding that those responsibilites include works like distribution of slips, preparing list of polling agents etc along with campaigning.

“As the town area is not very large in population, each corporators will be canvassing in very small areas and will have to convert or retain only around 50-100 votes in favour of the party,” Jagdish Patel further added.
