Ahmedabad Kerala Samajam bids Onam goodbye for the yr

At what was probably the last Onam celebration in the city for the year, the Thaltej ward of the Ahmedabad Kerala Samajam (AKS) bid the harvest festival its annual goodbye.

Held at Sindhu Bhavan on Sunday, the event was attended by more than 300 people, and saw many absorbing cultural performances by the students.

The chief guest for the event was Vinod Rao, IAS, additional commissioner for rural development in the state, who also inaugurated the ceremony.

The guest of honour was KM Ramachandran, convenor of ASHA, an association for humanitarian activities.

Besides performances, the event saw awards being given out to meritorious students of class X and XII, of the state as well as CBSE board.

A (flower) rangoli competition had been held in the morning, whose prizes were also given. Besides, those having made important contributions in the field of art and culture were also awarded.

Rao said, "This year, we celebrated the festival of Onam in a different way. We used to go to Kerala for Onam every year, but this time, our relatives came to Ahmedabad instead. So, they enjoyed a Gujarati touch to the festival."

Speaking about ASHA, Ramachandran said, "Ahmedabad Kerala Samajam's Social and Humanitarian Activities (ASHA) is an important part of the AKS and was established a year ago. Under the initiative, we work for activities like placement services, medical emergencies, matrimonial services, and travel and tourism for AKS members."

Speaking on Kerala, Ramachandran said, "Kerala is one of the hottest tourism destinations in India. Hence, through ASHA, we are building a strong platform to promote and provide information about Kerala."
