Ahmedabad finds a WAY to healthy environment

The World Around You(WAY)will expose city students to environment basics.

The World Around You (WAY), an environment initiative, was launched in Ahmedabad on Tuesday by SK Nanda, principal secretary, ministry of environment and forest.

WAY will introduce concepts like global warming, climatic change and other topics related to environment in schools. It will also hold competitions in January, in which students from city schools will participate.

Speaking on the occasion, Wricha Johari, founder and programme director of WAY said, "Environmental literacy is not just a scientist's domain. It is about understanding how human decisions and actions affect environmental quality. This understanding results in responsible and effective citizenship."

"Initially, WAY will remain confined in Ahmedabad but we may expand to other parts of the state in days to come," Johari added.

Narayan Desai, noted Gandhian and son of late Mahadev Desai, BN Srivastava, chairman of PCCF Wildlife, PK Saxena deputy welfare commissioner, Sudharshan Iyengar, vice-chancellor of Gujarat Vidyapith and Ravi Saxena, principal secretary, industries were present during the event.

Nishith Popat, Class V student of Kendriya Vidyalaya, said, "Trees,  forest, rivers, birds
help us find answers to our queries about environment."

Another student Natasha Gupta, said, "It is about saving the environment in today's world. Whatever resource that we have are enough for us and should be utilised in a proper manner."
