Ahmedabad is becoming technologically sound in almost every field, and medical tourism is one of them. Observations over the past couple of months have revealed that the number of people visiting the city for treatment has multiplied considerably. Reason? Apparently, Ahmedabad offers the same quality of treatment as any other metropolitan cities like Mumbai and Delhi, and at a comparatively affordable price too. This has made the city a hot favourite among those looking forward to availing medical treatment.

People coming to Ahmedabad for medical treatment usually come from neighbouring states like Rajasthan and Madhya Pradesh. According to doctors, the number of patients visiting the city for treatment has increased by around 40 per cent in the last few months. Dr Pravin Garg said, “Ahmedabad is just as good in services and treatments as any other metropolitan city. Although a number of people still go to Mumbai in case the disease is of a serious nature, but it is only for personal satisfaction.”

In most cases, the reference for a particular hospital or doctor spreads by word of mouth. “People hear our names and about the treatments from various sources, and insist that they want to be treated by one of our doctors,” said Dr Amit Agarwal.

An increase of 40 per cent is very impressive, and Shalby hospital has recorded even higher statistics. Neerajlal of Shalby hospital said, “We have witnessed a drastic increase of about 60-70 per cent in the past six-seven months in the number of patients coming from outside. This is mainly because Ahmedabad has now developed in the field and people have realised that.”

According to statistics, in the past six months Shalby hospital has received around 347 patients from Bombay for consultation, of which 165 have been treated in the hospital itself.  Surat is next in line. It has received 205 patients for consultation, of which 115 have underwent treatment in the city. They have even had patients from Jodhpur, Indore, Kolkata, Delhi and a few other cities.

Dr Aalap Shah, director, Mission Health Physiotherapy Centre said, “We do get patients from outside, thanks to our neurophysiotherapy department, which is rarely found in India.” Tushar Mehta, 48, a resident of Mumbai who suffered a paralytic stroke, after which his hands and legs stopped functioning, is a patient at Mission Health.

“I had heard about Dr Aalap Shah from a relative, so I decided to come here. I was so impressed seeing the arrangement and technology they used that I decided to get my treatment done here. I don’t think I would have got such good treatment even in Mumbai. Ahmedabad is picking up really fast in the field of medicine,” said Mehta, who is now 90 per cent cured and will require only 15 more days to recover completely.
