The metropolitan magistrate court in Ahmedabad has written to Tis Hazari court requesting production before it of Fasal ur Rehman alias Fazlu Rehman, to expedite the hearing of the cases in which he is an accused.

In its letter, the court has stated that there are many cases pending against Rehman, a gangster who was on the run before he was apprehended by the Delhi police. Since he has not been produced in the Ahmedabad court for a long time, the court has not been able to proceed further in the cases in which he is an accused. The Ahmedabad court has requested the Delhi court to allow his production in Ahmedabad.

Fazlu was arrested in August 2006 by the Delhi police from the Indo-Nepal border near Gorakhpur. He is wanted in 30 cases of extortion, blackmailing and abduction. Subsequently, he was arrested in connection with the cases registered against him in Ahmedabad. However, due to security reasons, he was not produced before the Ahmedabad court and, instead, was lodged in Tihar jail in Delhi.

The gangster is accused of various offenses including extortion and kidnapping. The police have filed the charge-sheets in the cases in which he is an accused but the cases have not been committed for trial as he is yet to be produced in the Ahmedabad court.

Rehman is an accused in various high-profile cases including the case regarding the threats issued to Surat-based 'Praful Sarees' owner, Pankaj Agarwal, allegedly on behalf of Bollywood actress Shilpa Shetty's father, Surender Shetty.

The gangster was also involved in the abduction of Gautam Adani of the Adani Group of Industries in 1997. Fazlu's associates were arrested by the Gujarat police when they tried to kidnap Karsanbhai Patel of Nirma Industries Ltd four years back.

Rehman was allegedly hiding in Dubai and Malaysia before he was nabbed by the Delhi police. The CBI had put him on its most wanted list of criminals because of the number of cases registered against him in different states. A red corner notice had also been issued against him by the Interpol.
