The city police commissionerate recently proposed to form a new police station for the hugely populated Vasna area in the city. The huge area falling under Ellisbridge police station at present will then be bifurcated to the proposed Vasna police station owing to the wide boundaries and staff crunch faced by the former. The proposed police station will also cover part of the areas of Vejalpur and Sarkhej police stations.

Sources in the city police department say that the proposal has already been sent to the home department and they are awaiting a nod for the new police station. Number of police stations has been increased from 30 to 35, the five new stations to be added being the Vastrapur, Gujarat University, Isanpur, Ramol and Chandkheda police stations.

The police department had been planning to increase the number of city police stations looking at the widening boundaries of Ahmedabad city. According to sources, the police department has plans of increasing its strength to 48 police stations and also bifurcate the city into three sectors. At present, the city police jurisdiction is divided into two sectors. The population of the city has increased significantly over a decade, while the city police commissionarate's area of operation has also increased with the widening of city boundaries by including villages surrounding the city.

Sources further said that the Ellisbridge police station covers the highest number of areas in west Ahmedabad. The police station which is also reeling under severe staff crunch is facing problems in detection of crime and maintaining law and order.
