An awareness programme, including a skit, some music, and a parade by the police band was held at Vastrapur Lake by Save the Children and other NGOs on Tuesday evening.

Speaking on the occasion, chief guest for the event, joint commissioner of police, headquarters, Sanjay Shrivastav talked about how apart from institutional efforts, individual efforts were needed in eradicating the menace.

“We need to be far more conscious. Several times we see child labour happening but ignore it conveniently. A phone call informing the authorities can help us in ending the problem,” Shrivastav said.

On why the event was organised at Vastrapur Lake, district child protection officer Ahmedabad, Rameshchandra Lot said that it was in Vastrapur that the maximum number of roadside stalls employed children.

The event was a collaborative effort of Save the Children, Childline, Ahmedabad City Police and District Child Protection Unit.

Shyaam Prakash of Saath said that the problem of child labour was equally bad in rural areas. “But incidentally there is no law to prevent child labour in rural areas. This is because the law itself allows for five hours of work in the field for children, subject to certain conditions,” said Prakash.

State programme manager of Save the Children, Rajan Mohanty said Gujarat is a relatively well-off in the country. “Yet lakhs of children are being pushed into child labour. We need to find reasons for the same,” said Mohanty.

The police band that took out a parade attracted attention of those thronging Vastrapur Lake in the evening. The band circled the lake with its message against child labour and ended it at Vastrapur Lake. The event ended with visitors standing in attention to the National Anthem.
