The Ahmedabad Municipal Corporation (AMC) has been successful in reducing the carbon emission level of the city as a result of its initiatives to lower energy
consumption.

The civic body has been able to bring down its CO2 emission below the national level, said a survey carried out by ICLEI-South Asia.

Along with AMC, around 53 cities of India and neighbouring countries participated in the project called ‘The Roadmap of South Asian Cities and Local Governments for the post 2012 global climate agreement’, which was carried out by ICLEI-South India and supported by the British High Commission in New Delhi.

According to a survey, Ahmedabad’s carbon emission was 67,80,752 tonnes during the year 2007-08.

The corporation’s activities resulted in emission of 1,97,320 tonnes of CO2, while community activities within city limit resulted in emission of 65,83,432 tonnes of CO2, said the survey. The per capita CO2 emission in Ahmedabad is 1.49 tonnes, which is lower than the national average of 1.75 tonnes, said the survey.

ICLEI South Asia discussed action plans covering energy efficient and design-based street lighting, efficient transport management, energy-efficient water pumping systems and waste management that could help bring down carbon emission level in the city.

“Climate change is the most evident environmental, social and economic problem faced by the world today,” said Dilip Mahajan, deputy municipal commissioner of the AMC. The society needs to move from high energy consumption and wasteful economic model to energy-saving and waste-reducing model, he said.

He also thanked ICLEI-South Asia and the British High Commission in India for carrying out the survey to analyse the carbon emission level in the city and indicating avenues to reduce carbon emission in the city.

“We are happy to represent Ahmedabad city at COP 15 as a part of the South Asian delegation and look forward to bringing back enriching experience to share with the city,” said Mahajan.
