After a series of failed attempts to control the increasing instances of bird hits near the city airport, the Ahmedabad Municipal Corporation (AMC) and the Airport Authority of India (AAI) have finally come up with a concrete measure to bring an end to the brutality. It is for the first time that the AMC and the AAI have decided to join hands to form a five-member committee for ensuring that the airport is bird-free.

The decision to come up with a five-member committee was taken at a meeting of AMC and AAI officials held recently. The committee will comprise two officials from the civic body and three from the airport.

For some time now, the AAI officials had been blaming the AMC for not removing garbage dump, which they claim attracts birds, from around the airport. “The authorities decided to form a task force to resolve the issue and solve the problem of increasing bird population around the airport. The committee will meet every fortnight to come up with short-term plans to get rid of birds; it will also chalk out long-term plans to resolve the problem. It will explore possibilities, other than zon guns, bird chasers and reflective films, to keep birds away from the airport apart,” said a senior AMC official.

A couple of other related issues were discussed at the meeting like the removal of garbage dump from the airport vicinity, providing cover to open dustbins and garbage containers outside airport and peripheral areas, taking punitive actions against garbage throwers residing alongside the airport boundary wall, controlling dog and cattle menace and ensuring weekly visit of dog squad and cattle menace squad, controlling the rise in the number of visiting birds like vultures and kites and restricting their landing and free movement in the area.

Confirming the move, an AAI official said this time the authorities will definitely come up with some viable plan to curb the bird hit incidents. However, another official said that this is not the first time such a meeting took place between the AAI and the civic body.

“For the last many years, similar meetings and discussions have been conducted by both the parties, but nothing conclusive came out of it. In fact, there were lots of confusions between the two bodies regarding cleaning of the airport vicinity. But this time we hope that the AMC will realise its duty and clear all the meat shops, and encroachments, among other problems, to curb bird menace,” he said.
