Your property would soon face the wrath of the Ahmedabad Municipal Corporation’s (AMC) tax department if you own property and its outstanding tax is over Rs50,000.

AMC’s tax department has short-listed around 45,000 properties whose owners have failed to pay outstanding tax even after its extended rebate scheme and will be sealed soon.

AMC officials kicked off their drive to seal buildings across the city on Tuesday. They sealed around 128 buildings in four zones of the
city — with 103 sealed properties in the West Zone alone.

Chairmen of tax and revenue committee Mayur Dave said the officials have just started the drive and in coming days it will only become more stringent. “We have short-listed buildings in all zones of the city. This includes property bills with and more than Rs.50,000 as outstanding property tax,” said Dave.

With this, the AMC officials collected Rs1.64 crore as property tax on Tuesday. Collection of property tax so far has reached Rs271 crore. AMC officials have targeted a collection of Rs447 crore from property tax.

AMC officials have also geared up to collect taxes from central government offices. Dave said 88 buildings used as post offices are yet to pay their property tax worth Rs1.32 crore. If this was not enough around 80 offices of central government have an outstanding bill of Rs3.31 crore as property tax.

“Now we intend to be more stringent in tax collection so that the civic body can plan its finances for development works in the city,” said Dave.
