According to Delhi Police statistics, 1,894 school buses and 1,916 mini-buses ferrying students were prosecuted in the capital this year till February 15 for flouting traffic rules.
A whopping 3,800 vehicles ferrying school children were challaned this year for violating traffic regulations, with the maximum number of cases reported in the first fortnight of February.
According to Delhi police statistics, 1,894 school buses and 1,916 mini-buses ferrying students were prosecuted in the capital this year till February 15 for flouting traffic rules, including violation of Supreme Court directions.
A senior police official said a driver was also arrested in connection with a non-fatal accident.
"A special drive against school vans and buses involved in overloading and unauthorised vehicles plying began on January 31," a senior police official said.
As many as 1,102 drivers were prosecuted in the national capital on a single day on February one for violating traffic rules while ferrying children to schools. During the first ten days of February, police challaned 2,011 drivers.
Prosecution included some of the drivers not having even driving licences, red light jumping, vehicles having no insurance and driving dangerously.
"For ensuring that children travel safely, police action in itself is not sufficient. Let parents, schools and traffic police ensure that no violations take place," the official said.
Satyendra Garg, joint commissioner of police (Traffic), had earlier solicited the cooperation of all concerned, saying "We will continue the drive against unsafe transportation of children."
The highest number of challans against vehicles ferrying school children was reported in 2008 when 20,929 vehicles, including 19,196 mini-buses, were fined.
The figures showed a decline in the next two years with action being taken against 20,559 vehicles, including 18,949 mini-buses in 2009 and 16,232 vehicles, including 15,078 mini-buses in 2010 being seized.
The official said the enforcement wing of Delhi government's transport department also took action against erring school buses. "A total of 3,234 challans of 1,664 vehicles were issued by the transport department in the past three years. 772 vehicles were also impounded," he said.
According to figures, six students were injured in an accident involving the bus ferrying students of Navy Children School in Chanakyapuri this year.
