Ahead the state-level Independence Day function in Nadiad town of the district, the Kheda police on Thursday arrested a person for illegal possession of 31 detonators and seized the explosives. Police, primarily, believe that the detonators were meant for mining activity, but they are investigating the channel of supply of the explosive devices in the district.
Acting on a tip-off, police arrested Bhavesh Patel from Kamla crossroads in Kheda town. Patel is a resident of Borsad and was arrested after cops found 31 detonators in his possession. However, prima face, police believe that the explosives were procured for the mining activity going on in and around Borsad.
Talking to DNA, the district superintendent of police, Kheda, GL Singhal said that their main concern was the supply network of such detonators in the district. "We are checking whether Patel has supplied such detonators to anyone else in the state," he said.
Police are also checking details of the places from where the seized detonators were procured and where they were meant to be supplied. "The incident has raised an alarm as chief minister Narendra Modi is going to hoist the national flag in Nadiad on the Independence Day," a senior cop said.
Sources also said that the detonators found in possession of Patel are of the same kind that was used in the Ahmedabad serial blasts. "This type of detonators have been procured by operatives of Indian Mujahideen and have later been used for triggering serial blasts," the source said.
Earlier on Monday, an alert was sounded and security tightened in the district after an anonymous letter threatening a terror attack on the famous Dakor Temple on Independence Day was received.
