At least 26 people were today arrested by the police for allegedly engaging in rioting and
setting afire vehicles in the national capital near a government school where five girls had died three weeks ago during a stampede.

"We arrested 26 persons after booking them for rioting," said a senior police officer.

A group of parents, who were also joined in by the locals, organised a protest in front of the Senior Secondary School in Northeast Delhi's Khajuri Khas this morning as the
school reopened 19 days after the incident, demanding a CBI inquiry into it as well as payment of enhanced compensation to the family of the victims.

Some of the protesters set ablaze a low-floor DTC bus as well as an ordinary DTC bus. Reports said a van was also set on fire but there was no official confirmation of it.

Five girls were killed and 34 other students injured in the stampede in the school on September 10 while they were making their way up and down a staircase after being asked to shift classrooms during an examination.
