In a tragic mishap at Mount Abu, 16 people were killed and 47 others injured when the bus they were travelling in veered of the hilly road and plunged into a gorge about 100 feet down. Most of the victims were believed to be from Ahmedabad, as the bus was returning from Mount Abu to Nehrunagar in the city.

According to police, the Gujarat State Road Transport Corporation (GSRTC) bus bearing RTO registration number GJ-18 Y-3835 plummeted into the valley when the driver lost control. The incident took place around 5:00 pm near Chhipa Bedi village, about 5 km away from Abu Road, on the serpentine road connecting Abu Road to the top of Mount Abu. The victims had not been identified by the time the report went to press. “We are making our best efforts to find out who the victims are,’’ said Mahipalsingh Ujjwal, additional collector, Sirohi district, Rajasthan.

The police said the driver lost control maybe due to the bad weather and the slippery road. However, the police were also investigating whether the driver was driving carelessly. The driver survived the mishap.

The Rajasthan police and fire brigade personnel began rescue operations soon after the mishap. Police inspector of Mount Abu, Kishan Singh, said the injured were being treated at Global Hospital at Abu Road.

“Heavy rains and cloudy weather might have obstructed the driver’s vision. The  possibility of his negligent driving could be a factor too,” said Singh.

GSRTC runs a regular bus service to Mount Abu from Nehrunagar. According to PD Patel, PRO of GSRTC, the driver, Tirsinh Jadeja, had been suspended.”The bus fell 100 feet down, killing 16 passengers. Army, CRPF and local people are helping in the rescue operations,” said Patel.
