As the controversial Sanjay Leela Bhansali film Padmaavat released on Thursday, triggering spats of violence across the country, members of Chhatra Parishad (CP), the students’ wing of West Bengal Pradesh Congress, distributed free tickets of the movie near Sealdah area.

CP supporters holding banners and posters saying ‘BJP-RSS go back’, gave out the tickets to 2.30 pm show of Friday. “It has been done as a protest of attack on school bus by protestors,” said Ashutosh Chatterjee, state CP president.

Suman Chakraborty, secretary, CP, said that it was their way of replying the saffron brigade. "It is our way of protesting against the attempts of stopping of screening the film by secular forces like the BJP.  We started this campaign today by distributing 20 tickets today. We have talked to the state Congress president and our CP president. We will distribute 2000-3000 tickets of the film among people who want to watch it," he said. He also said that if BJP supporters continue their protests across the country, Chhatra Parishad would show it on giant screens all over Kolkata, once the DVD of the film was released.

Comments of All India Congress Committee (AICC) general secretary Digvijay Singh had put the party in a lot of embarrassment. He said on Thursday that films which hurt public sentiments should not be made. Reacting to this, Congress MP Gaurav Gogoi who was in town said that Congress’ views are that of the party president Rahul Gandhi. “Look at the kind of violence that is prevailing. If state governments cant protect lives, they should not hold on to their seats,” he said.

Meanwhile, multiplex authorities said that the response for Padmaavat had been lukewarm. Subhashish Ganguly, regional director (east), Inox Leisure Limited said although the opening had not been overwhelming, it had been just ok. “The response has not been fantastic but we hope it will pick up as there is a long weekend coming up,” Ganguly said. Asked if there was any additional security arrangement, he said, “Although local police were kept on the loop, nothing really happened. As it is we beef up our security system around August 15 and January 26 so it was nothing out of the ordinary.”
