Dravida Munnetra Kazhagam (DMK) on Friday said that it continues to be part of the Congress-led alliance even though it has differences over the impeachment of Chief Justice of India Dipak Misra.

With the DMK MPs staying away from the meeting called by the Congress on Friday in New Delhi to sign the motion seeking removal of the CJI, this has given rise to the talks of the Dravidian party wavering stand and a rift in the opposition parties ranks.

Dismissing the rumours of his party’s rift with Congress, DMK organising secretary and Rajya Sabha MP RS Bharathi said that his party continued to be part of the Congress-led alliance. “As a policy of the party, we have never supported any impeachment motion in the Parliament so far. So we are not supporting the impeachment of Chief Justice,” said he told DNA. He said that DMK has made it stand of not signing the impeachment motion against the CJI in the earlier meeting. “So we are not invited to the Friday’s meeting as we made our decision clear much earlier,” he noted.

Bharathi who also heads the party’s legal wing said that the DMK had boycotted the impeachment motion against Supreme Court judge V Ramasamy and Sikkim High Court judge PD Dinakaran both hailing from Tamil Nadu. “It is our consistent stand on impeachment,” he said, adding that there was no specific complaint of corruption charges against the CJI. “If there was some specific charge of corruption against the CJI, we would have discussed with the party’s high command and considered supporting the motion,” he said.

DMK leader said that other than the impeachment motion, his party stands with the Congress and other opposition parties on all other political issues. DMK along with eight other opposition parties including Congress, Left parties, MDMK and IUML has been at the forefront on the protests over the Cauvery issue taking on the ruling AIADMK at the state and the BJP government at the centre. Sources in the DMK said that party working president MK Stalin is keen to convert the opposition unity in the state into an electoral alliance for the ensuing Lok Sabha polls next year.
