Senior BJP leader Arun Jaitley Saturday said he would contest the elections in Amritsar against a "reluctant" former Punjab chief minister Amarinder Singh of the Congress in a dignified manner.

"The Congress party has finally announced its candidate from Amritsar parliamentary seat against me. They have named a reluctant Amrinder Singh as their candidate. My best wishes to him," Jaitley said in his blog.

"I will contest this election in a dignified manner with the best traditions of our healthy democracy. I will promise the people of Amritsar that I shall provide a better voice for them. May the best man win," he added.

Amarinder Singh had Thursday expressed his reluctance to contest the Amritsar Lok Sabha seat but had later added that he would contest if Congress president Sonia Gandhi asked him to. After she asked him to do so, Amarinder agreed.
