After facing its worst poll debacle in the recently concluded Delhi assembly polls, a defensive Congress on Tuesday said that it respected the people's verdict and assured that it would be back in the competition in two to three years.

"We respect people's mandate, and we will be back in the competition in two-three years," said senior Congress leader Ambika Soni. Another party leader, however, voiced the growing chorus to bring in new faces and much-needed changes into the party.

"Changes should be made; new faces should be brought in. Rahul Gandhi ji cannot be blamed for this at all," said Congress leader Anil Shastri. In a major setback for the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) and the Congress, the AAP won 67 out of the 70 assembly seats on offer in Delhi.

The Congress, which ruled the national capital for 15 years up to 2013 and was trying to rebuild its lost ground in Delhi, failed to even open its account. The BJP, which was relying heavily on Prime Minister Narendra Modi's popularity and had also brought in former IPS officer Kiran Bedi as its chief ministerial candidate to counter Kejriwal, managed to secure just three seats.
