What happened in 1992?

1992 was a quite an eventful year. It was marked by an Oscar win on one hand and one of the worst episodes of communal riots in the country on the other. In the midst of all this, Indian cinema's biggest Khan, Shah Rukh Khan made his debut in the film 'Deewana'.

Harshad Mehta scam
In April 1992, journalist Sucheta Dalal exposed Harshad Mehta, who was involved in massive stock manipulation through worthless bank receipts. Mehta was convicted for four of 27 charges and tried for nine years, till he died in 2001.

Satyajit Ray's Oscar win and his demise
In 1992, Satyajit Ray brought home an Academy Award - he was conferred with an Honorary Academy Award for his work in cinema. But this was also the year that 'The Apu Trilogy' creator passed away due to a heart attack on April 23. An author, music composer and illustrator, Ray was honoured the Bharat Ratna by the Government of India.

Establishment of SEBI
The Securities and Exchange Board of India (SEBI) came into existence in this year on April 22 through the SEBI Act, 1992. The Board is the regulator of the securities market in the country and currently, is headquartered at Bandra Kurla Complex (BKC) in Mumbai.

Attack on the Babri Masjid
Undisputedly, the attack on the Babri Masjid in Ayodhya in North India would be considered the definitive moment of not just this year, but many years to come. This episode marked the beginning of nation-wide communal riots.
