The Western Railway has reportedly come up with a unique idea to increase revenue after Union Railway Minister Suresh Prabhu asked all 11 railway zones to suggest ways to make profit.

The Western Railway has proposed leasing railway platforms to allow civilians to hold wedding receptions or parties. These events could be held on platforms of big railway stations like Surat or less crowded ones like  Navapur which is on the border of Maharashtra and Gujarat, reports the Deccan Chronicle.

According to the report in the daily, a senior railway official said, "Surat station is massive, and there are people there who would actually pay to have their wedding receptions or parties on platforms as well. We will propose platform no. 4 for the project as it has two-three booking offices, which is ideal for these kind of functions."

The official added that such plans cannot be carried out in suburban stations of Mumbai which are always overcrowded but stations like Navapur which has only a few trains passing by can be useful.

The Western Railway hopes to benefit from this project during the wedding season of December and they also have hopes from other festive months like June, September, and October.

According to the daily, WR divisional railway manager Mukul Jain said, “We are waiting for a policy that will help outline how we are to go about it.”
