West Bengal: Youth shot dead by TMC leader, arrested

A Trinamool Congress leader and secretary of Panchayat Samity of Malda district of West Bengal Pabitra Rai was arrested by Malda district police on Sunday for shooting a youth dead and another injured. “We have arrested one person Pabitra Rai in connection to the firing. We will find out in the course of investigation whether Rai fired or not,” said Prasun Banerjee, Superintendent of Police, Malda. 

Around 6pm, a car owned by Rai and a motorcycle met with an accident near English Bazar in Malda district. Rai tried fleeing the spot, when the local villagers surrounded the car and prevented him from escaping. As soon as the car was stopped, Rai stepped out and fired at the two motorcycle-borne youths. 

While one youth, Ashim Mondal was killed in the incident, another youth has suffered serious injuries and is now undergoing treatment at a local hospital. 

Later, the family members of the deceased filed an FIR with the police. Immediately, the police arrested Rai and he is likely to be produced before the court on Monday.
