Trinamool leader and party block president was shot dead inside the party office. The incident happened around 9 pm on Sunday at Bagula area in Nadia district in Bengal.

Hanshkhali block president and Pradhan of Bagula I Gram Panchayat, 52-year-old Dulal Biswas was in a meeting with party workers at the Bagula party office at about 8.30 pm when about a dozen people, most of them masked, entered and sprayed him with bullets, killing him on the spot and injuring two others before they fled.

Biswas was rushed to the hospital where he was declared brought dead.

While TMC leaders alleged that the murder had been a handiwork of BJP and CPI(M) together, BJP and CPI(M) said that it was a result of an infighting within the TMC.

TMC district president Ujjal Biswas said, “It is a planned murder by the CPI(M) and BJP together. The intention is to scare us ahead of the panchayat elections next year.”

A family member of the deceased said that a police complaint has been filed and about 12 persons who had been identified had been named in the FIR.

The CID has taken over the investigation and two persons have been detained for questioning. Police have also recovered two double barrel guns, a silencer and a chopper from the vicinity.

An event in the memory of Biswas was held on Monday. TMC national secretary general Dr Partha Chatterjee along party MP Abhishek Banerjee took part in it.

“It has been done by the communal party. They took out armed rallies some days ago and now have resorted to violence. We have instructed the police and administration to probe into the matter and book offenders as soon as possible,” Dr Chatterjee said.

Banerjee said that BJP was doing these as they were unable to beat TMC politically. “This shows what kind of coward they are. I have information that those who had been named in the FIR are close associates of BJP state president Dilip Ghosh,” he said.

Ghosh, however, brushed aside all allegations. “It is the result of their gang clash. We don't believe in such a culture at BJP. These people cannot save their own leaders, how will they keep the people of Bengal safe?” Ghosh said.

It was found out that Biswas, about five years ago had defected from the CPI(M) to TMC and since then had worked towards strengthening the party organisation in Nadia district. Anticipating threat to his life, Biswas had been given two armed security personnel but they were on leave the day the incident happened. Police said that murderers might have known about it.
