Thankfully, no casualties were reported.
A fire broke out early Monday morning at a super-speciality hospital in Diamond Harbour, in South 24 Parganas district of West Bengal, reported Zee 24 Ghanta. No one was killed in the incident, though many patients felt nauseous owing to smoke emanating from the blaze.
The fire started in the labour room on the 4th floor in the morning. An alert patient first saw the smoke and brought it to the notice of nurses and other hospital staffers. Even as authorities were trying to get in touch with fire brigade, people started panicking as the entire labour room was enveloped in smoke.
Many tried to rush out of the room with their newborns. Some expectant mothers also tried to jostle their way out fearing danger.
The fire soon spread to other floors of the hospital, thereby increasing the sense of chaos. In a short time, a fire engine arrived on the spot and managed to bring the blaze under control. According to initial investigation, a short circuit appears to be the culprit.
However, the massive panic created due to the smoke could have led to an untoward incident, if the hospital staffers didn’t intervene.
As soon as the fire broke out, relatives of the patients tried to forcefully enter the main complex to rescue their loved ones. Alert staffers ensured that there were no mishaps, and everyone was successfully brought out of the hospital. They stood outside the hospital till the threat was averted.
The only downside of what could've been a terrifying evening was the fact that many patients felt sick as they had inhaled lot of smoke. The sick were treated by doctors.
A fire from a short circuit broke out in Kolkata’s elite Priya Cinema Hall on Sunday night. There too, alert hall workers ensured all movie goers managed to exit safely even before the fire brigade arrived.
