A year after former Tamil Nadu chief minister J Jayalalithaa died after undergoing treatment at Chennai's Apollo Hospital, its founder chairman Dr Prathap C Reddy on Saturday said that the doctors were advised not to reveal the critical condition of Jayalalithaa citing law and order issues.

Speaking to reporters here, Reddy noted that Jayalalithaa was brought to the hospital in a critical condition. "She showed significant progress later. But the disease pattern was such that the unfortunate thing happened. Our team of doctors did the best they could," he said.

"We are told that she was very close to everybody's heart. The advice to the doctors was 'Please don't say that she is serious because you will not be able to control the emotions of the people'," he said, adding that he has clarified the same on multiple instances before.

Jayalalithaa was admitted to Apollo Hospital here on September 11, 2016 and died there on December 5, 2016. The hospital had issued a statement that she was admitted for fever and dehydration.

Reddy said doctors were advised not to announce that Jayalalithaa was in a critical stage as it would be difficult to control people's emotions, but he did not mention who had advised the doctors not to disclose the actual status of her health.

Reddy said that he cannot reveal more as an inquiry by Commission constituted under Justice A Arumughaswamy is going on. To a query on whether he received any summons by the inquiry commission, Reddy said, "I have not. I don't know if my doctors have." He maintained that the team provided the best treatment for the late CM.

Apollo Hospitals Vice-Chairperson Preetha Reddy told a private Tamil channel on Friday that the hospital treated her with best clinicians from New Delhi as well as from abroad. "See, I think the hospital has done it's best. We have the best clinicians from (New) Delhi, from AIIMS, from abroad within this system", she said.

"There is an enquiry and I think that is the best thing that has been done. Let them go through the data. I think all the mysteries will then be solved", she said. Asked who was beside Jayalalithaa when she was treated, Reddy said people who were required and approved by her (Jayalalithaa) were by her bedside during treatment.
