The West Bengal Legislative Assembly today passed the West Bengal Panchayat Elections (Amendment) Bill, 2017.

The objective of the bill is to make provisions of maintaining simultaneous memberships to the Legislative Assembly or Parliament and Panchayats by members of panchayat samitis and zilla parishads or Siliguri Mahakuma Parishad.

"Earlier if a member of gram panchayat or zilla parishad was elected to Legislative Assembly or to the Parliament, then he had to tender resignation from any of the elected offices.

But now after passage of this amendment bill, a member of panchayat samiti or zilla parishad after being elected to the Legislative Assembly or Parliament may hold simultaneous membership. He will not have to resign from any of the elected offices," state Panchayat and Rural development minister Subrata Mukherjee told reporters.
