A young man from Bhiwandi got down on his knees in the middle of a street and proposed to his burkha-clad lady love. Amidst all the cheering and clapping, they shared a hug and that has was enough to cause them a world of grief with local leaders of their community.

National Lokhind Party and Raza Academy accused the young couple of acting against Islamic religious tenets, according to a report in the Times Of India. 

The National Lokhind Party also promised to make the couple do squats in public, but later retracted the statement saying they would take legal action against them for stopping traffic.

The girl’s father told the daily that their family was being harassed and that his daughter had also threatened to commit suicide because of it.

A complaint has been registered with the Thane police by the girl's family against those harassing the couple and the person who shot and uploaded the video online, Manoj Patil, DCP (zone II, Thane) told TOI, "Strict action would be taken against those who are threatening her and her family."

Shakeel Raza, secretary, Raza Academy, which forced the apology, told the daily, "We only made the couple realise their mistake and asked them to apologise for whatever they did publicly."

The young boy posted an apology video regarding the incident saying he was to blame, that he was going to get engaged to the girl on March 11 with the consent of both their families, adding that on account of some confusion he proposed to her in public, "It is my fault alone, it is not fair if someone else gets punished for my actions, if I commit such a mistake again I am willing to bear the consequences and whatever punishment is seen fit," he said in the video.

According to the report in the daily, the couple, concerned about their safety have temporarily left the city.
