Buoyed by the success of second phase of Udaan, in which nearly 5,000 youth from J&K got for jobs in big private sector companies and nationalised banks, the Centre is now planning massive job recruitment drive for 10,000 youth before the onset of winter to checkmate the simmering unrest.

About 49 companies are being approached by the National Skill Development Council (NSDC) to get the recruitment done directly in J&K this time.

Sources said it is being done on an urgent basis to create a feel good factor in J&K where the situation has become murky once again due to massive floods that have wrecked the infrastructure and predict bad tourist season - the main source of earning for a majority of population in the Valley.

The Centre is apprehensive of state bracing up for yet another bad phase of agitation and the Valley returning to 2010 cycle of stone-pelting due to distress caused by the floods and its aftermath. More job creation for youth means lesser people getting embroiled in agitation.

The Udaan, a key confidence building scheme of the Union home ministry in J&K, initially did not elicit good response, especially in the Valley, has bolstered Centre's hopes lately as both corporate sector and J&K youth are responding to the scheme well.

Government sources said the Centre has asked the state government and NSDC to prepare a recruitment plan, that is, where the job camps would be set up and which all companies would come and offer jobs and fix the dates.

"The effort is to get this done by November end or before the winter sets in. The idea is to have direct interviews and tests of the candidates and give them job offers across the table," sources said.

NSDC managing director, Dilip Chenoy told dna that the private sector's commitment to provide jobs to J&K youth is now over 62,000 and is going up.

A senior home ministry official said that by the end of this year they are hoping the commitment to cross 80,000 jobs for the next five years.

"While the initial phase did not augur well for Udaan, in the second phase of the 9,800 jobs offered only 5,000 were taken up by the J&K youth. The dropout rate is decreasing sharply and the number of candidates turning up for interviews has gone up sharply. In many camps conducted by the private companies recently, the number of candidates was several times of the jobs up for grabs. It is a very healthy sign," said Chenoy.

The companies that have offered skill training along with the job include the likes of TCS, Tata Motors, Accenture, Cognizant, Wipro, Yes Bank, Canara Bank, Infosys, EduSports, Religare etc.

Interestingly, most of the companies are quite impressed by the knowledge, talent and skill levels of Kashmiri youth and have themselves offered to increase the intake.
