Liquor baron Vijay Mallya, a fugitive of Indian law enforcement agencies for money laundering, has resigned from the Rajya Sabha.
He sent his resignation to the Ethics Committee of the Rajya Sabha that had decided unanimously to expel him. The committee headed by veteran Congress leader Karan Singh had given Mallya a week's time to explain his position on the charges of default on bank loans in excess of Rs 9,000 crore.

He said, "I don't want my name and reputation to be further dragged in mud." Mallya's Rajya Sabha term would have ended in August this year.
Members of the Ethics Committee said, "Mallya's resignation is merely a formality to earn some brawny points as he knew he would be thrown out for his gross misconduct."
India had sought deportation of the 60-year-old liquor baron last week after issuance of a non-bailable warrant against him for money laundering.
On social media – twitter and Facebook - Mallya kept away from the controversy and was unabashedly tweeting and retweeting posts on IPL marches, Royal Challengers and Kingfisher, including a dance sequence of "Daddy Gayle and Kohli shake their legs to Shane Watson's La Bamba".
After getting his passport revoked, Mallya had said that he wanted a reasonable settlement with creditor banks for his defunct airline, but they would not be getting any money by taking his passport or arresting him.
Election to the Rajya Sabha twice – from 2002-2008 and 2010 to 2016 - Mallya asked 621 questions, had 67 assurances against his name and was a member of the commerce committee since September 1, 2015. He did not have any special mentions against his name nor did he introduce any private member bills. He hardly participated in debates.
Entitled for Rs. 28.50 crore of MPLADS funds, Mallya recommended works for Rs. 12.79 crore, gave records of incurred expenditure of Rs. 9.96 crore with 73.78% utilisation and has an unspent balance of Rs. 4.26 crore.
