Party workers and relatives visited Uttarakhand Chief Minister Harish Rawat with bouquets and sweets on Friday, wishing him the very best. The wishes, however, were for his 36th wedding anniversary, a day before the state’s poll results are declared.

In the sprawling Doon valley and the picturesque city of Dehradun, it was raining on Friday, but supporters and party workers kept pouring in at Rawat’s residence at Bijapur guest house in ever-increasing numbers. They wished him a happy wedding anniversary and also celebrated Holi with him.

The first thing Rawat did on Friday morning is seek the blessings of Lord Shiva at Tapkeshwar Mahadev Temple, after which he returned home to cut the anniversary cake with his wife Renuka, a fellow Congress member he married in 1981. “Today is my wedding anniversary,” Rawat confirmed to DNA.

He spent the day at home and left only in the evening to meet party workers for Holi celebrations. Though he was anxious, he was trying to assert confidence. Keeping aside the predictions of  the exit polls, he said, “I’m confident of getting 45 seats. After the exit polls, I reworked political calculations and I’m sure I will get a minimum of 43 seats. Exit polls are just predictions, reality is different.”

He also said that the BJP has reason for worry as the party has only splurged money during this election. “We sought votes in the name of development and our workers have knocked on every door in the state,” Rawat said. On taking support from independent legislators and other small party members, he said that he was open to people who are like-minded, declaring, though, that the BJP is not going to win.

The BJP, nevertheless, has claimed certain victory based on the analysis of the exit polls. BJP leader and former Chief Minister Ramesh Pokhriyal Nishank is ready for a saffron victory in the state. “We fought the elections based on the development work carried out by Prime Minister Narendra Modi and anti-incumbency of the Congress-led Uttarakhand government, which has led the state into financial ruin,” Nishank said.

He, however, refrained from commenting on the post of the cm if the BJP wins the elections. “It is the central leaders who will decide. We are just ground workers of the party and the decision (on the CM) will be taken by central leaders.”
