Uttarakhand government on Monday launched a scheme to provide mid-day meal to women in the state aged above 60.

The 'Mukhyamantri Vriddha Mahila Poshan Yojana' was launched by Chief Minister Harish Rawat from Charba Anganwadi Kendra under Sahaspur area of the city, an official release said. The scheme will be run through anganwadi kendras. Rawat also laid the foundation stones of four new Adarsha Anganwadi Kendras in the area on the occasion.

Describing mid-day meal as the world's biggest community kitchen, the Chief Minister said women nutrition was one of the priorities of his government and the launch of the scheme was a step in that direction.

Anganwadi kendras will be strengthened further and developed as multi-purpose centres, he said, adding that the number of the kendras as well as the posts of supervisors will be increased.

Reiterating his government's commitment to women's welfare, he said efforts are underway to ensure that no woman dies due to malnutrition or lack of medical care in rural areas of the state.
