In what appears to be an open challenge to cops in Uttar Pradesh, unidentified assailants brutally killed a sub-inspector rank police officer and looted his service pistol in Bijnor district late on Friday night.
According to reports, the body of SC Malik, a Station House Officer (SHO), posted at Balawali under Mandawar Police Station in Bijnor, was found in a sugarcane field. Malik had left Mandawar Police Station at around 8 pm for the Balawali police post and was reportedly attacked by unidentified assailants when he reached Gopalpur village.
The cop's throat was slit and fingers chopped off with sharp-edged weapons. After killing him, the assailants threw his body in a sugarcane field and escaped with his service pistol. The SHO’s family in Meerut has been informed about his death.
“His body bore many injury marks with sharp-edged weapons. His service pistol is also missing. We have sought his mobile call details to gather some clues,” said SP Bijnor Atul Sharma. The District Magistrate Jagat Raj said that the police have taken the case as a challenge.
Despite tall claims made by the Yogi government, the state is still grappling with a deteriorating law and order situation.
