A woman beat her husband to death with a rolling pin in Uttar Pradesh’s Hussainabad Khanpur village in Ambedkar district.

The woman, identified as Sumitra Rajbhar (46), took the extreme step in retaliation for several years of domestic abuse at the hands of her husband Gauri Prasad Rajbhar (52), who she said was an alcoholic. She and their 15-year-old daughter were victims of domestic abuse, the neighbours told the police investigating the case.

While speaking to the cops, the neighbours added that Sumitra and her daughter had been persuading Rajbhar to quit drinking so that the family could live a happy life. However, he refused to listen and continued drinking and assaulting his family members.

“It was a daily routine. He would abuse his wife and then beat her without any provocation. Many a times they ran out of house to save their lives,” a neighbour told the police officer, investigating the case.

On Monday night, Rajbhar entered the house in an inebriated state and started threatening her. He then hit her with a stick following which Sumitra lost control. She hit him repeatedly on his head with a rolling pin till he fell unconscious.

On hearing his screams, other family members and neighbours rushed to the house and took profusely-bleeding Rajbhar to the district hospital where he was declared brought dead.

Rajbhbar’ sister Jamurta Devi lodged an FIR on Tuesday against Sumitra and her minor daughter at Zaidpur Police Station. Both have been taken into custody by the police. A case of culpable homicide not amounting to murder has been lodged against both the accused.

Rajbhar’s sister alleged in the FIR that her daughter too supported Sumitra when she was repeatedly hitting her husband with the rolling pin, which ultimately led to his death. Jitendra Singh, the SHO Zaidpur Police Station, said they have recorded the statements of accused, neighbours and family members.

“Prima facie it looks to be a case of unintentional killing in self-defence. The deceased used to beat them badly on daily basis after consuming liquor. It seems that the wife lost her patience and hit him without any intention to kill her husband,” said the SHO, who is investigating the case.

The SHO said that Sumitra’s minor daughter did not play any role in the unintentional murder. “She was also a victim of his daily beating so she made no effort to save her father when her mother was hitting him on head.”.

The SHO said that both the accused will also be shown to a psychiatrist for check up of their mental status after producing them in the court.
