In a case of conversion, a Dalit woman in the communally-sensitive Faizabad district of Uttar Pradesh has lodged a complaint against her husband for forcing her and her three children to embrace Islam or face death.

The case was reported from Mahmaood Mau village under Mawai Police Station in Faizabad district. Faizabad SSP Manoj Kumar said that Shobhawati has submitted a complaint against her husband charging him of forcible conversion to Islam.

She told police that her husband Virender had gone to Saudi Arabia three years ago where he embraced Islam and changed his name to Bilal. She alleged that his entire family, including three brothers and a sister, has embraced Islam for monetary benefits back home in the village.

"The family was given a good amount for accepting Islam by influential Muslims in the village. They used the money to build the house. I was also lured, but I refused to take the money to change my religion," she said.

On his return from Saudi Arabia, he forced her and three children to embrace Islam. When she refused, her husband took away two of her children and threatened her and her children with death if she did not accept Islam.

The local Bajrang Dal and VHP activists have taken up her case and met senior police officials. They are also likely to visit the village where Hindus were being forced to embrace Islam for money to verify her allegations.

"We have registered a case against her husband and other family members for forcing the woman to change her religion for money. We are also investigating people behind alleged conversion in the village," said the SSP.
