The Uttar Pradesh Police recovered the body of a Japanese tourist found hanging from a tree near the banks of the Ganga in.

Superintendent of Police, Varanasi, Rahul Raj, said that the body has been identified as that of a 24-year-old Japanese national from Nagasaki city in Japan.

"The dead body of a foreigner has been found hanging from the tree. As per the documents found, his name is Atomu Amajato. He is a native of Japan as per the information given in his passport and visa," said Raj.

People who came across the body of the tourist informed the police, who rushed from Bhelupur police station to the site of the incident.

Finger print experts and a dog squad also arrived on the scene.

"It has been found that he came to India, in Delhi on March 11. Then he went to Agra and from there he came to Varanasi on March 13 by Marudhar Express. We have spoken to the travel agent in Delhi that had booked his train and have also recovered the documents," he added.

A bag that was lying beside the body contained $10, a calculator, two cigarettes, medicines and a planning calendar, police officials said. They added the cause of death is still being investigated.

The Japanese embassy has been informed of the incident.
