An Uttar Pradesh Police inspector was arrested on Sunday by the city SP on charges of accepting bribe but was released later as no bribe money was found from him.

"UP Police Crime Branch Inspector Sarva Chandra came here with his team to probe a case of forgery and extortion. He was caught by the City SP Shivdeep W Lande after a complaint was received from one Pankaj Kumar that he was asking for bribe in relation with a case," Patna Senior SP Jitendra Rana said.

Rana said the inspector was apprehended from Dak Bungalow area in central Patna and taken to Kotwali police station, but was let off by Lande as no money was recovered from him, nor any corroborative evidence was found. The inspector's statement was recorded by the City SP and then he was allowed to leave. Rana said he asked Lande to submit a report on the entire incident, which he did.

In the report, Lande said the SIM card seller Pankaj had sold a card which was used in a crime in Uttar Pradesh in 2012. The UP Police had earlier sought information about the case from him and he had provided it.

Lande said the inspector was here with his team since January 2 and Bihar Police was cooperating in their investigation in areas like Phulwari Sharif and Ara. He said the SIM card seller on Saturday complained to him that Pankaj had threatened him to take him to Uttar Pradesh and implicate him in false cases if he did not pay a bribe of Rs 10,000.

Pankaj "negotiated the bribe demanded and brought it down to Rs 5,000 and a meeting place was fixed. We laid a trap to nab the inspector, but he became suspicious on seeing our movement and tried to escape. I intercepted him and brought him to police station," Lande said in the report.

"Since the act of bribery was not completed, his side of the story was taken and he was allowed to leave. He was not arrested," Lande added.
