In an emotional appeal to voters of her Lok Sabha constituency Rae Bareli, Congress President Sonia Gandhi on Wednesday in an open letter asked the electorate to vote for the Congress-Samajwadi Party alliance. Even though listed as a star speaker, she did not hit the campaign trail. She did not even visit her constituency, leading to speculations that she did not approve of the alliance with the SP. There were rumours that she was angry at the SP for fielding candidates in the 10 Assembly seats in Rae Bareli and Amethi, known as Congress' borough.

In the letter, she explained that she could not visit her electorate due to some reasons. She wrote, "Due to some problems, I could not be present between all of you this time. Representing you is a matter of pride for me, my family."

"Rae Bareli and Amethi have become an integral part of our lives, ours is a special relationship, it's the biggest asset of my life," she said addressing the constituents of the twin Gandhi bastions. Rae Bareli is going to polls on February 23.

Gandhi also hit out at Modi in the letter, asking him where are the 'achche din'. She accused the PM of blocking welfare schemes in Amethi and making the people of Uttar Pradesh suffer.

"Modi can go to any extent to save his chair," she said in the letter. "The Centre government is depriving you of welfare programmes deliberately, and I am pained to see this happening," she said. BJP has responded to the letter, saying it indicates the Congress-SP alliance has failed.

The fourth phase of polling in UP will be held in 53 Assembly constituencies, including the backward Bundelkhand region and the Nehru-Gandhi pocket borough of Rae Bareli. Other districts going to polls in this phase are Pratapgarh, Kaushambi, Allahabad, Jalaun, Jhansi, Lalitpur and, Fatehpur.
