It is official now! The alliance between Samajwadi Party and the Congress is in deep trouble. The oldest party of the country feels hoodwinked by SP’s decision to contest seats which the Congress wrested in 2012 assembly elections in Uttar Pradesh. Ajay Maken, senior spokesperson of the Congress described the decision as unfortunate. The truth is that Congress was taken by surprise by this decision.

Such was the shock that it sent a furious Rahul Gandhi into a huddle with senior Congress leaders whom he met at Congress War Room. Rahul Gandhi through the day consulted Congress President Sonia Gandhi and his sister Priyanka Gandhi Vadra. The feeling within the Congress is that if this alliance is accepted on current term and conditions then it will finish the Congress Party in Uttar Pradesh.

Highly placed sources confirmed that if Congress is given anything less than 100 seats then it would go alone in Uttar Pradesh assembly elections. This is when Congress Vice President Rahul Gandhi is extremely keen to have anti-BJP alliance in UP. But with 70 seats on its plate, the choice is limited for the party. A close aide of Rahul Gandhi confided that there is tremendous pressure from the workers to fight on maximum seats.

Sources said that Samajwadi Party continues to insist that Congress should accommodate all other regional parties from its quota of 100 which Congress feels is not possible because its number then will get reduced to 70 seats which to some would be tantamount to an organization hara-kiri. Congress leaders admit that the division would cut into anti demonetization sentiment which exists in Uttar Pradesh but they have been left with no choice as 70 seats are not acceptable to them. The bigger problem for the Congress is also that first phase of the election is roughly 20 days ahead and it needs to declare its candidate if it wants to remain relevant in the game.
