Finishing his Saturday's campaign with a public meeting in the evening, Prime Minister Narendra Modi responded to the opposition parties' criticism of him going on a campaign overboard. "I am a BJP worker besides being the Prime Minister and a Member of Parliament," he said.

Offering clarifications on the confusion over his road show in the morning, Modi said, "It pains to remember that election officials in the city had deprived me of an opportunity to hold a rally during the Lok Sabha polls. Assembly elections are a festival of democracy. I travelled in an open vehicle on my way to holy temples to avail this opportunity and interact with the people of my constituency," he told the crowd.

"Permission for a rally was given at the last moment," he said. During the 2014 Lok Sabha elections, the district administration had refused to give permission for a rally in the city.

Chanting "Har Har Mahadev", he expressed his happiness over visiting the temples of Kashi Vishwanath and Kaal Bhairav, two of the most popular temples of Varanasi. He also spoke a few lines in Bhojpuri, commonly spoken by locals here.

Beside a road show in the morning, Modi also addressed a rally in Jaunpur, 85 kms from Varanasi.

"I will return tonight, to interact with my people and spend the night in Kashi. It doesn't just hold political importance to me".

He also told the crowd about his government's efforts in the beautification of Varanasi and said to solve the issue of cleanliness people will have to contribute in the state-wide safai abhiyan (cleanliness drive) to be held on March 8.
