Hailing the success stories of members of the Vaishya community, Uttar Pradesh Chief Minister Yogi Adityanath on Thursday urged them to invest in UP, assuring the community that his government would ensure their safety from previously prevalent pulls and pressures of the mafia.

He was speaking at the Agroha festival, the all-India conclave of the Vaishya community, which he was attending on the personal invitation of Rajya Sabha MP and Essel Group Chairman Dr Subhash Chandra. Dr Chandra is also the chief patron of the Agroha Trust.

The highlight of the event was the participation of over 40 MLAs, MP and ministers — including Union minister Vijay Goel —from the Vaishya community belonging to six political parties.

"When I was invited to attend the Agroha festival, I decided that UP is the biggest state of the country and as its Chief Minister I must also come here to ask for something from you people. I was asked what will my demand be and I said that under the leadership of PM Modi we are building a new investment climate and policy in UP. So, I will ask for investment. I assure the trading community that we shall be responsible for their safety and security," Yogi said.

"We have made it clear that there will be complete rule of law in the state. Elements that represent the earlier culture of goondaism in a mismanaged system of governance, those who terrorised traders and businessmen and threatened the community, have been forewarned," he said.

Talking about Dr Chandra he said, "Dr Subhash Chandra is a household name. Once in Gorakhpur, some schoolchildren came to me and said they wanted me to organise a programme of Dr Chandra in eastern UP. I asked them who is Dr Chandra and they said he does a programme on Zee TV. This shows how things funnel down in society."

"The media is doing a good job, but it needs to ask how it can serve the interests of the nation, the society and its religion. Zee TV and Zee News, through their programmes, are leaving a constructive impression on the youth. And why not? When the carrier of such constructive and creative approach is the head of the organisation himself," Yogi said.

In his address, Dr Chandra announced that a bank for the Vaishya community would soon be launched and that he had already applied for permission for it to the Reserve Bank of India.

"I was in Lucknow when members of the community met me. Minister in UP government Atul Garg asked me if we could open a bank for the community and we took the suggestion seriously and fast-tracked work on it."

Dr Chandra also told the gathering that all members of the community would be stakeholders in the bank. "We shall hold only a nominal share in the bank. It will be owned by you," he told the community.
