The family members of a college student, who committed suicide after allegedly being molested by three youths, have staged a demonstration, claiming police laxity in the case.

The 21-year-old student had hanged herself to death at her home in Badausa town on Thursday and booked the trio for molestation and abetting suicide, officials said.

But claiming laxity by the police, the student's family members staged a demonstration outside the office of the Banda superintendent of police.

The father and the brother of the student carried her body to the SP office where they alleged the police did not act in time.

The student's brother claimed that prior to her taking the extreme step, he had conveyed his concerns to the police, but was scolded and told to leave the police station.

Responding to the charges, SP, Banda, Shalini said the student's father had met the police and told that that some youngsters were harassing her over mobile phone.

"We had put the phone on surveillance, but on that day itself, the girl committed suicide. The complaint of police laxity is being investigated upon," she said.

Police officials on Friday had registered a case of molestation and abetting suicide against the accused trio based on a complaint by her father.

"One of the accused has been arrested," Atara police station in-charge Durgvijay Sing had said.
